There are significant online deals on printers & printer cartridges. Some have even tried generic Ink Cartridges for printers. Although I found them acceptable for general use, I would always recommend the branded ink for any prints that are expected to last long.

Photo printers are stricter in terms of the ink cartridge use. Canon & Epson, two of the most reputed photo printer makers always recommend using either Epson Ink or Canon Ink for photography. I have used both these inkjet printers for commercial photo printing & found that using the brand’s own make of paper & cartridges create better long lasting images.

Currently we maintain only Epson printers & Epson Ink Cartridges for all my commercial photo printing for my home based photo business. Along with the ink, the photo paper is equally important to make an everlasting print. The choice of paper depends on what type of picture you are printing.

Although I have preferred to use glossy papers for printing, there are several grades of paper that could determine how long the print would last. Cheap generic paper could ruin in less than a year. Moreover, the specialized commercial printers are calibrated to work best with their own paper & their own inkjet cartridges.

We do specialized photography called impressionistic photography. For the impressionistic effect to come out beautifully, the ink needs to dry up very fast & not leave any residual traces. Generic ink or generic paper is almost impossible to use in special cases like ours.

Printing technology have also improved by leaps & bounds, with printers becoming more efficient & faster. They use less ink & the ink remains intact longer. Generic Inkjet Cartridges are cheap & some of them offer the ability to be refilled at a much lower cost. They could be used for day-to-day use like normal letter printing or printing of mailers.
