Visio is a Microsoft Software Program used to create diagrams & flowcharts. Visio is a very costly software to buy – in the range of  US $200. Dia, on the other hand, is an open source free Microsoft Visio like Diagram & Flowchart making software.

Dia is a free Visio like diagram creation program for Linux, Unix and Windows released under the GPL license. Dia is inspired by Visio & could be a free Visio alternative for drawing simple flowcharts & diagrams. Dia is an open-source visual-editing software that can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams, flowcharts & org charts.

The software Dia, pronounced “dee-a”, after the first portion of the word “Diagram” as used in Swedish, the language of the original creator Alexander Larsson. Dia is mostly a menu-driven software & depends heavily on a menu on the right mouse button inside the diagram.

Free Flowchart & Diagram creating software Dia can be used to create diagrams of all kinds. You can create UML class diagrams, Entity-Relationship modeling, network diagrams among others. The software program is very flexible and dynamically loads diagram-types from disks. It stores diagrams in an XML format, but can read and write a number of different formats.

It can load and save diagrams to a custom XML format (gzipped by default, to save space), can export diagrams to a number of formats, including EPS, SVG, XFIG, WMF and PNG, and can print diagrams (including ones that span multiple pages).

Much like Visio, Dia is capable of creating electronic circuit diagrams, computer network diagrams and even simple flowcharts for business projects. You can export these diagrams with a number of image formats, or even in a format readable by Visio.

Free Diagram making software Dia has certain limitations but since the software is continuously being enhanced, many of the issues & problems will be handled in the coming releases. One of the problems reported by users is the usage of fonts. Font support is not very standard especially when you want to make images, print, and send the files to other people.

Dia on Unix uses the FreeType library to provide better font support. The fonts for this are in turn controlled by font-config. Note that this means that remote fonts servers cannot be used. Due to differences in font rendering engines and in fonts available, the width may not be the same when moving files between computers, and particularly when moving between Windows and Unix.
