Fix Files With Extension Key – Computer Registry or Security Files

Files with extension .key contain either computer registry information or it contains security code when a new program is registered. These are very common files & exist in all computers.

File Extension Key are system files that are commonly stored in the program’s application folder or the systems preferences folder.

File Extension Key often contain the encryption or the license information. Although license keys would be automatically installed upon registering a new software, you can also manually add a .key file. These files are used in Windows computers as well as Apple Mac systems.

In Linux (or in Unix based computers), .key files could be installed manually from the command line:

  1. If the license server service is running, stop it by running the following command: /etc/ini.d/spm stop
  2. Run /var/spm/spm_keyib -x <*.keys>.
  3. Restart your server /etc/ini.d/spm start

Problems with File Extension Key could arise due to incorrect registry entry as well. To fix that, you have to run a system scan and identify all the .key files that do not have a corresponding program to run. The program could have been deleted or uninstalled incorrectly leaving the key file on the system.
