Before to go into what this Free & Powerful Photo Editor can do for us, I would like to give a quick history behind the software. It was originally a Microsoft funded project & was developed as a possible replacement to Microsoft Paint.

Now the original team who started the project has developed Paint.NET to an extremely powerful digital photo editing software.

Though the development of this software still continues, the current version is more powerful than Microsoft Paint that comes along with any Windows based computer’s OS. It is light & is available for free download. However, this photo editing software is only available for Windows based computers.

Paint.NET is released under the Open Source license from MIT. The software has quite a few features which make it very powerful – it supports layers, cloning, coloring & an easy to use interface. There are 2 features that I would like to mention which makes it so useful for quick editing of pictures.

I used MS Paint for a long time for quickly posting my images onto my blogs. But Paint.NET adds these 2 features that tempted me to replace MS Paint.

1. The special effects features with noise reduction & sharpening lets me clean up the picture fast

2. The light layers feature lets me add my logo & watermark easily

This free open source software eliminates the need to open up Adobe Photoshop unless I am preparing an extremely large image file.
