I wish I named this post Free Adobe Photoshop . This is an excellent Adobe Photoshop alternative – a very powerful and free photo editing software GIMP.
Although GIMP was originally designed for Unix and Linux, now GIMP is available for Windows that can run on any NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista).
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) was designed by Spencer Kimball & Peter Mattis but they offer the entire source codes for anyone who wants to build on that.
You can download the free copy of GIMP from the GIMP official website.
Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paintshop Pro & Microsoft Paint are also called raster editors. These digital editing software work directly on the pixels that make up the image. Much like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP is a raster editor too.
You can use the Free GIMP like Adobe Photoshop for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. The Painting feature offers a full set of tools such as brush, pencil, airbrush and others.
There’s also a gradient editor, blend tool and anti-aliasing. And, GIMP has manipulation tools for rotating, cropping and scaling, as well as a foreground extraction tool and multiple selection tools.
Another great feature is the animation tool that lets you load and save animations in a convenient frame-as-layer format.So anyway you look, GIMP is as good as Free Adobe Photoshop for beginners & advanced amateur photographers & web designers.
The GIMP Web site offers new users visual tutorials, and a registry of plug-ins, scripts and images that the development community contributed that can be downloaded. GIMP is beta volunteer-developed software, support and updates may not be available upon demand.
So next time you look for a digital picture editing software program think of GIMP as another Free Adobe Photoshop & try it out.
