FluidSynth is used by notation programs like MuseScore to provide SoundFont playback on any system. SoundFont banks are tightly integrated with MIDI devices & are used very frequently in many computer music sequencers. The SoundFont files have an extension of .SBK
FluidSynth also known as iiwusynth, is a free open source program which synthesizes using SoundFont technology without need for a SoundFont-compatible computer sound card.

While FluidSynth is a command line software synthesizer, it can use Qsynth as a fluidsynth GUI front-end application for users to control and manage a variety of command line softsynth for FluidSynth.
FluidSynth can also be used to play a list of MIDI files. Simply run fluidsynth with the SoundFont and the list of MIDI files to play. It can be used to render MIDI input or MIDI files to audio. The MIDI events are read from a MIDI device. The sound is rendered in real-time to the sound output device.
