Virtualdub , probably coming from the word Virtual Dubbing , is a free video capture & free linear video processing software download for 32 bit Windows systems.

VirtualDub is programmed to handle AVI video files primarily. It can however read MPEG-1 video files as well as handle sets of BMP images.

VirtualDub is released under the GNU General Public License . You can download the free copy from SourceForge site.

With VitrualDub , you can take a captured clip, trim the ends, clean up some of the noise, convert it to the proper frame size, and write out a better one!

Virtualdub is started off as a college project at UCSB. Written in C++ this free AVI video capture software has evolved but is not as functional as some of the commercial audio video editors .

But continuous enhancements to Virtual Dub have gained 21 filters, the ability to decode MPEG-1 files, more than doubled in speed, and nearly quintupled in object size.

• Reads and writes AVI2 (OpenDML) and multi-segment AVI clips
• Integrated MPEG-1 and Motion-JPEG decoders
• Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video
• Extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3×3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold
• Bilinear and bicubic resampling
• Preview the results, with live audio

VirtualDub is not a video editor application. It is a pre- and post-processor of video files & hence is capable of some basic edit functions. At the same time, a large number of filters are now available to work with Virtual Dub & enhance the functionalities. There are a large number of 3rd party filters as well.
