Google Renames Applications & Services – More Features & Collaboration with Free Google Sites & Google Photos

google docs google picasa renamed google photosGoogle is renaming some of their Google applications & services & re-branding them with a focus on further enhancing integration with other Google services & Google Apps.

Google announced on its official blog on May 21, 2008 that Google Sites, its simplified Web site creation service, is now available to any registered Google user.

Previously, only businesses with Google Apps accounts and their own domains had access to Google Sites.

Unlike the free Web site creation services (like the earlier Geocities) Google Sites are collaborative, which engineering manager Andrew Zaeske said in the announcement makes them ideal for “team projects, company intranets, community groups, classrooms, clubs, family updates, you name it.”

No HTML knowledge is required, and sites are hosted for free at Google domains like sites.google.com/organicwheatgrassmoothieclub.

JotSpot became Google Sites, Writely became Google Docs, Picasa could become Google Photos. There have been hints in Google documentations, user codes & messages to users & new registrants. In the blog post Google Operating System – The unofficial News & Tips on Google, the author refers to strong hints on Picasa being renamed Google Photos.

Google also announced DoubleClick’s Performics affiliate ad network has become the Google Affiliate Network as part of Google’s acquisition of the ad agency. It will stop supporting Adsense referrals under Google’s Adsense banner from August 2008.
