Ultra Mobile Laptops from HP & ASUS – ASUS Eee “Netbook” & HP “Mini-Note”
ASUS had much success selling the EEE PC since its launch in October 2007. With prices ranging from USD 399 to USD 550, this tiny laptop with a solid state hard drive sold over a million units within the 10 months.
While on a trip to Calcutta, India, I saw ASUS sold in roadshows & kiosks and the crowd interested in this tiny laptop (more popularly called netbook ) seemed to be school goers who spend a lot of their time messaging friends, browsing the internet & chatting.

ASUS has now launched the superior ASUS Eee 901 & ASUS Eee 1000 versions. The major upgrade has been in terms of the processor.
The ASUS Eee 901 & 1000 netbooks will have the 1.6GHz Atom CPU from Intel, replacing the now-dated Celeron M of the first ASUS Eee 900 notebook.
The 901 version will have a screen size of 8.9 inches (close to HP’s Mini-Note) & the ASUS Eee 1000 will have a 10 inch screen. The solid state hard drive capacity will remain at 12 GB for the Windows version & 20 GB for the Linux version, but to compensate for the hard drive capacity ASUS will provide 20 GB of online space for data storage & back up.
The battery life, which had huge complaints, is also expected to improve to about 7.8 hours.
If size & functionality are the main lookout, then the HP’s Linux Notebook is superior in many respect. With a 8.9" WXGA (1280×800) Widescreen Anti-glare LCD display, a RAM of 1GB DDR2-667 (Max Capacity 2GB) & a SATA hard drive capacity of 120GB @ 5400rpm this HP’s laptop is available at less that USD 550.
The keyboard layout of this HP’s laptop is very comfortable compared to ASUS Eee’s quite cramped keyboard.
The laptop runs on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. The only complaint had been the poor battery life of around 2.5 hours.
